Japan to Set Unified IPTV Standards by Late 2006

The Japanese Communications Ministry is to team up with NHK, Fuji Television Network, Nippon Telegraph and Telephone, and other companies to unify standards for IPTV (Internet Protocol Television). The ministry seeks to standardize transmission speed, viewer location determination, and so on before launching the internet broadcasting service of digital terrestrial television by the end of 2006. The ministry also expects to enlist the participation of Matsushita, Sony, and Sharp for the said purpose.
